“The widow becomes God’s Exhibit A to teach the world (and his people in particular) how far we have to go before our thoughts and actions line up with his. This is not a lesson in civility or tips for being nicer to widows. That goal - while certainly an improvement over waht widows often experience - is far too timid for God. He isn’t interested in tinkering with the existing system of human values so we can say we’re doing things “better” than others. The gospel completely overhauls the human soul and introduces us to a radically new dimension of human relationships.”
